Lola Janssen becomes a widow when an escaped convict hits her husband, Jan, over the head with a frying pan. Caleb, the convict, tries to take her husband's place. Jan and Caleb look alike, but Lola is not sure Caleb is her husband. The false Jan is a different person. Lola is persuaded to believe that the difference could be the result of the blow on the head. Because she will not live with Caleb, she must leave behind her beautiful home and start a different life. Caleb sends an assassin to find her and bring her back. When she divorces the fake Jan, he tries to get her killed and must flee for her life. This suspense story relies on elements from the myth of the Candyman.
