A Searching of the Soul

Maurice Gandy takes readers along for the ride as characters set out on a journey to find their meaning in life during a free and expressive time in history. From comical and crude to mythical and mysterious, there is a character for everyone to fall in love with. I love that it is written in the form of poetry, although it is best when read as a story rather than getting lost in trying to follow a poetic rhythm. It is a great story of the trials, defeat, and success of self-discovery. It is perfect for anyone who wants to read about other people's struggle while trying to find their true place in life. Just as in real life, the characters in the story go through many adventures and many mishaps along the way. It was a wonderful book for me to read as I am trying to go to college and figure out what I want my life to turn out like. I had the priviledge to attend a reading of The Calpocalypse, in which the author brings his characters to life. He uses audience participation to give his book a voice, and makes his readings a very enjoyable experience. I have read The Calpocalypse twice!!!

The Calpocalypse

What a colorfully descriptive and epic tale of the wonderful, the strange, and the awful characters who gathered during this time; I could see them in my mind's eye. A really unusual book!

Performance Piece

I had the privilege of attending a book reading/book signing for The Calpocalypse. I was captivated by the way Gandy had people act out scenes from the book. The characters have such unique characteristics that having the opportunity to "play" a character would be a treat. So, not only is The Calpocalypse a great read, but it is also fun to watch. A wonderful piece for anyone...could definitely be used as a performance piece in a classroom.

An Unexpected Correlation

The interweaving of historic truth and mythic truth with the transformational epiphanies of multiple characters (controlled by a central consciousness) reminds the reader of the classic One Hundred Days of Solitude by Marquez.

Unique, fun and innovative

This novel/poem/dream is spectacularly entertaining. The subject is coming of age in the 60's, with the setting in a parallel universe California. The character names alone, which are clever and almost magically illuminating, are worth the admission price. The story is told with wonderful humor and satire, but there is a profound message delivered as well. This is a book that begs to be read aloud and performed. For anyone who experienced the freedom, turbulence and confusion of the 60's, or who didn't but wants to, this is required reading. Did I mention that it is fun? Highest recommendation.
