The Butterfly Life

Christianity is radical. So radical that it will not allow us to fit into any cultural norms. This book is intended to awaken our imagination on just how radical that life is supposed to be. My family has had more than 100 years of study and research on culture and the Biblical world view, which began with my grandfather's street preaching in Detroit, my mother and fathers field work in cultures around the world, their forty years of teaching about cultures at Dallas International University and my own journey from the Jungle of Papua New Guinea to becoming a senior executive at an international corporation. That legacy of cultural understanding has produced a way of describing Biblical morality that works both across cultural and outside cultural norms.
This book is written in hopes of inspiring you, the reader, to partner with the Holy Spirit inside you, giving them permission through prayer to change you into a Christ-like person who can love God and your neighbor. If you desire to be a person who loves your neighbor from a different culture, so does the Holy Spirit inside you. Making that actually happen in our lives is more difficult than we imagine and takes more time than we wish it would.
We live in an age where cultures are colliding, and people disagree about almost everything. It does not matter if it is how to raise our children, what to eat, how old the earth is, how it was created, or what defines us as people. We can find a reason to disagree with each other. This book provides my explanation for this and provides the reader with a path toward unity.
I believe that God designed into humans the ability to have and to hold onto differences in moral understanding. I believe this ability is necessary for humans to thrive in the incredibly diverse places God created for us to live in. I believe that mechanisms for adapting our moral understanding are important to our well-being and necessary for us to adapt to our cultural setting.
If we are Christians, the Holy Spirit inside us desires to equip us to love those people who think differently than we do. In order to accomplish this, we must learn to deny the flesh, discern the devil and his lies, and live at peace with people we disagree with. These people can even be friends and family. Friends and family who read the same Bible and come away with a different understanding of right and wrong. This book was written to aid us in our journey to love all people, enemies and friends alike, just like Jesus taught in the Great Sermon (Matthew 5-7).
