Book Overview

From the author of Never Let Me Go and the Booker Prize-winning The Remains of the Day

The Romans have long since departed and Britain is steadily declining into ruin. But, at least, the wars that once ravaged the country have ceased. Axl and Beatrice, a couple of elderly Britons, decide that now is the time, finally, for them to set off across this troubled land of mist and rain to find the son they have not seen for years, the son they can scarcely remember. They know they will face many hazards--some strange and otherworldly--but they cannot foresee how their journey will reveal to them the dark and forgotten corners of their love for each other. Nor can they foresee that they will be joined on their journey by a Saxon warrior, his orphan charge, and a knight--each of them, like Axl and Beatrice, lost in some way to his own past, but drawn inexorably toward the comfort, and the burden, of the fullness of a life's memories.

Sometimes savage, sometimes mysterious, always intensely moving, Kazuo Ishiguro's first novel in a decade tells a luminous story about the act of forgetting and the power of memory, a resonant tale of love, vengeance, and war.

I really wanted to love this book, but…..

….. and this is really fickle and absolutely my issue but I couldn’t deal with the main character calling his wife princess. My issue, I know. I didn’t get very far and in all honesty, I did not give this book a fair chance but I just cannot handle a grown man calling his wife or any other woman, a princess. :-/

One of my absolute favorites

The book is written so beautifully yet so devastating as well. Ishiguro explores the memory and the effect of remembering what we have forgotten. The characters are amazing and all deserve extra thought and to truly dwell and examine what Ishiguro intended

A Quest of Memory

A story of love and devotion, with a quest to recover stolen memories…. Axl and Beatrice seek out their grown son, but find their memories fail them as a result of a pervasive mist that clouds the mind and hampers memory. Chivalrous dialogue, compelling characters, and a love for the ages are well represented, with a sprinkling of dark monks, ogres, sprites, and knights of historic import along the way. The whole book reads ethereally, surely just as the characters are living the story. There is a steady building of tension but no real satisfying peak; the climaxes are rather downplayed, the battles instantaneous and with little detail. It’s a very sedate adventure despite the potential excitement of hidden tunnels, a burning monastery, torture-by-predator birds, and a dragons lair. Safe for readers of most ages, 12+.

Fantastic

Hard to describe this one, but it will stay with you. I find myself thinking over passages of this book throughout the day. If I had to explain the premise of this one... the best I could come up with is a fairy tale for adults, a fable maybe. This one defies categorizing, and is a must read. It made me wish I was in a book club just so I could talk about it. I know, nerdy AF, but I don't care.
