I bet a day doesn't go by without me thinking of what happened in the fall of 1981. I was sixteen and living in Fort Wayne, Indiana. It all started when I had to switch schools because my parents couldn't afford the tuition at the private school I had attended since kindergarten. I was about to start my first day in a Public High School. I felt nervous and to make matter worse, my mom insisted that I dress like I was going back to my private school. It was one of my worst days of my life, until I met Amihan. She took me in right away and I made a friend on my first day. In 1981 schools were full of bullies and this new school was no exception. Things went from bad to horrible after that first day, tragedy, juvenile detention, and finally running from my cruel aunt and across the country on a freight train to get back to Amihan. At least my dad followed grandma's advice and taught me how to box and defend myself. I needed that skill to survive.
