The Buddha's Smile

Buried in the mist of some distant Chinese landscape, there is a mountain named Wobbly Peak, home to a wobbly monastery. Everything about it is precarious, uncertain and the monks there aren't sure of anything. No one seems able to answer the questions of the young Xu Kong, a novice who desperately wants to understand the meaning of it all. The abbot warns him against the many dangers lurking outside the monastery - the hordes of demons, the evil river kings, the giant, squinting, mono-podded roosters... But Xu Kong just has too many questions, and sets out to find a toothless old hermit, hoping to learn from him the secret of enlightenment. What will he find? Enlightenment? Illusion? Suffering? What do these words mean? And why does the statue of the Buddha smile, a little mischievously perhaps, as he sits there peering out into the impenetrable fog that shrouds the ever-shifting landscapes of the mind?
