Solid Debut

The Brotherhood Of Man starts off with an interesting prologue that will capture your attention and make you want to continue reading to see what this story is really about. This story is about four men who are brothers not by blood but by heart. Alexander Blue the Photographer, Anthony Games the Police Detective, Cyprus Kane the Street Technician, and Lorenzo Dali The Musician are four black men residing in Chicago, Illinois. Despite their varied careers they still find time to hang out every Friday night at each others homes and/or the clubs around town. I enjoyed reading about the relationship that existed between these four men. The chapters were told from each character's point of view and each man was introspective in his own way. For me, the author accomplished what is sometimes difficult to put in print - showcasing both positive and negative traits for each character. You root for them all because just like in life, bad guys are not all bad and good guys are not all good. The ending will surprise you and is worth the wait. There are some things that kept this book from achieving 5 stars in my opinion. There was an overwhelming reference to the movies. In certain parts of the book the author would write "just like a scene out of a movie". I don't want you telling me what the scene is from, let my imagination set the scene up, otherwise you're forcing your vision. At times it seemed as if the author forgot he was writing a novel and was looking at this as more of a screenplay. I think he just wanted the book to come to life and for you to feel like you were right there with the characters but that only worked to throw it over the top for me. Also, it was very unrealistic for Games who worked on the police force and Cyprus who worked the streets, to be so close. The way that Cyprus' boss, Fat Chicago Tone, was described, he would definitely know about and question this relationship. These two are like brothers, they go out in public together, and no one says anything? Not likely. Other than those few stumbles this was a good read and I would recommend you check it out.

Riveting!!!

Four men tackle the trials and tribulations of friendships that date back to childhood. Alex Blue is a successful photographer that's struggling with depression and an unhealthy obsession with his woman Avida. Lorenzo Dali is an up and coming jazz artist who packs the jazz clubs and getting the attention of several women. Anthony Games is a cop and Cyprus Kane is a professional thief and its only a matter of time before they bump heads. Things get complicated for the four friends when they are forced into a volatile situation that includes the Italian mafia, the FBI and murder. Who will make it in the end? The Brotherhood of Man is a riveting novel by Kimani Kinyua. Kinyua brought an interesting storyline and characters. I really liked the camaraderie and level of friendship between the men in this novel that's rarely seen in today's African-American fiction. Although they all took different paths in life, they still made time to go out on Friday nights. There is a twist to this story that is so shocking that it left me absolutely speechless. The Brotherhood of Man is full of fast-paced drama that will keep readers guessing until the end. This is certainly a great start to Kimani Kinyua's career.
