Set in the desolate landscape of western America in the late 1800s, ten-year-old Jesse Williams finds himself unwillingly thrust into the horrific conditions of an approaching winter after the brutal murder of his sister and a failed bank robbery force him and his last remaining companions on a long and treacherous journey. Their last hope of survival is the kid's father, who is believed to be residing far out west at a place the others call "El Dorado." As the journey stretches on and the kid contemplates his sister's death and his own growing obsession with vengeance, he finds himself compelled to grow beyond his years, but in doing so faces losing his innocence and even the last of his humanity.
