Jake Jamison is a twelve-year old boy whose life, as far as he is concerned, is ruined. Everything he values has been taken away. His parents are getting a divorce, and his dad has moved out. He and his mom are forced to move from their big comfortable house in Cincinnati,Ohio to a small trailer on his grandparent's property in the little town of Rockville, Indiana. He has been separated from all of his friends and can no longer play on the Little League baseball team that won a championship. These terrible setbacks seem insurmountable to Jake. In his young mind he envisions only a dull and boring future without any glimmer of hope, but that was before Niki came into his life! This story takes us on a journey in the everyday conflicts of a young boy discovering himself as he tries to make new friends...and how he deals with the innumerable temptations that pop into his life. He encounters the pressures of being the new 'kid' on the block, the hurtful taunting of an envious athlete and the puzzling emotions that confuse him when he meets a young gal from his earlier childhood, who sends his mind into a tailspin. Jake finds a flicker of joy in this little town, mostly because of a small, blond Cocker Spaniel named Niki. the many adventures and mischief that this little dog gets into while she plows through life penetrates his dour outlook. As she keeps him laughing with her antics, Jake learns some hard lessons about life. One minute he seems to be on top of the world and the next moment he finds himself fighting back tears. Niki helps him deal with his roller coaster life and ignites a small spark of hope that grows within him as he bonds with her. That small brown-eyed cocker helps to lighten his burdens as she shares his room, his bed and his heart. Many of the situations that Jake encounters are similar to the problems that children his age experience throughout their young lives. Through the undying love and companionship of his four-legged friend, he is able to discover The Brighter Side of Life.
