It all started with the ignorant and selfish behavior of Riggs' parents, who arranged a forced marriage. Riggs' classmate, Maddilynn, was sold to the eldest son of the Bissell family for 3000 dollars.

Maddilynn, a young girl, of course did not agree and chose to commit suicide. However, the heartless Bissell parents arranged a "ghost marriage" between the deceased Maddilynn and their second son, who had died from illness.
