The Brazos Kid: Memoirs: The First Twenty, --------or Thereabouts!

This story fills in the details about the book title. Brazos is a river in Texas. A river is not just a thread of water running across the land. It is a major environmental, cultural and even spiritual influencing factor on the terrain and the people within the vast area of it's drainage. The Kid in the title is me. I was born and grew up under the influence of this river. Like all of us, my particular Einsteinium co-ordinates of place and time , which for me, was here in the 'Cradle' of the Brazos River and in the most tumultuous time in American history, gave me my life, my early experiences and my 'world view'. A few experiences: bonding to my grandfather-gaining from him an ethos of family, agriculture, endurance, self sufficiency, inner strength, and history. Experiencing first hand the end of the Steam Train era. Living in post war Japan. 'Living', through my dad's war stories, the challenges , sacrifice, grief and valor of WWII. Gaining from him my life long love of airplanes. Enjoying a large extended family of cousins, aunts and uncles. I was 'Super Blest' with my time and place co-ordinates: Pre TV, computer, electronic mass media. Rural Texas: outdoors all day, everyday. Here is where the Ole Brazos River came into play. It helped to form the land that I lived on, the soil I learned to plow, provided the wild areas and the wildlife that became my spiritual home and my companions, provided a natural, free, year long zoo, park and playground that helped to initiate, then cement, my biological, geological, naturalistic world view. My later life took me far away from the Brazos: college, the Vietnam War, motorcycle racing, truck driving, but the Brazos and the Kid were always there with and in me. So much so that I repeatedly returned there to visit, to work, and to recharge 'my batteries' out on all the old farm land, the abandoned homesteads, and even down in the salty but cool , 'restorative' waters of the Brazos, splashing in it like a Kid again!
