The Boys of Blue River: A River of Seasons borrows on the adventures of Little Balsar, who grew up in the Indiana wilderness in the 1820s along the Big Blue River in south central Indiana. Balsar's exploits are described in the Indiana classic, The Bears of Blue River , first published by Charles Major in 1850. Daniel is a thirteen-year-old boy growing up in the city of Indianapolis, 150 years after Little Balsar's story. Like generations of boys before him, Daniel received a copy of The Bears of Blue River from his father and has read it many times. Each Sunday afternoon his parents would drive the family to visit their grandparents' farm along the Big Blue River north of Shelbyville, which coincidentally, is where Little Balsar's adventures take place. Daniel saves money from his paper route, cuts grass in the summer, rakes leaves in the fall, and shovels snow in the winter for his elderly neighbors until he acquires enough money to purchase a one-man inflatable life raft to float the Big Blue River. After proving to his parents that he is capable of traveling the route safely, he goes down the river in the Spring, Summer, and Fall witnessing the change of seasons while observing ever-changing characteristics of the environment along the way.
