The Boy With Green Hair

Made in the hopeful post-World War II era that produced such classics of social conscience as The Search and Intruder in the Dust, this provocative film is a fable for its time -- and ours. It tells the supernatural-tinged story of an orphan who finds a safe haven in small-town America until the day his hair turns green. Then the townfolk turn against him, frightened by the change they cannot understand. A call for tolerance, an inspiring statement that "different" doesn't mean "threatening," The Boy with Green Hair boasts a fine cast (Robert Ryan, Pat O'Brien, Dean Stockwell), a popular theme song (Nature Boy) and the feature-film debut of director Joseph Losey (The Servant, The Go-Between).

There was a boy, a very strange, enchanted boy.

Many movies have a message. In this case, it's a message surrounded by a movie. A war orphan, Peter Fry (Dean Stockwell), who leads a precarious life after hearing tales of how "green" is the color of spring and hope for all mankind in times of peril, finds that his hair turns green. His grandfather convinces him that it is a badge or a symbol that he is going to do something great. Being in pre-hippie days, everyone else thinks he's just strange, and it must've been something in the water or the milk. He has a vision allowing him to realize that he has a message for the world about how bad it is and that it creates war orphans. The question is how this message will be received and what they will do about his green hair? The film and the message may be a tad more complex. However, this is the gist of the movie.
