The cover and title suggest this novel is a formula western action saga (and there's nothing wrong with those). But, while there is action, The Bounty Trail--as we've come to expect from Richard S. Wheeler--hinges more on characterization than violence. Two men and a woman--all with less than perfect pasts, and all down on their luck--strive to resurrect their lives in a played-out (or is it?) mining town. Flawed they are, but each has a basic dignity that makes the reader care about them; and as they struggle, they grow, often in spite of themselves.
