Twenty miles outside Las Vegas, the desert is refusing to cooperate.

A major new highway is supposed to connect a massive new housing development to the bright lights of Sin City. There is just one problem: the tarmac inexplicably refuses to set. It is the blistering Nevada heat? Is it simply a bad batch of tarmac?

Enter a battle-weary, forty-year-old road construction troubleshooter sent into the dust to fix what seems to be a routine delay. What he does not know is that this specific problem can never be solved by engineering.

When he arrives, the job site is eerie and deserted. His diagnostic tests yield nothing. Then, out of the shimmering heat, a mysterious woman appears. She offers a cryptic piece of advice: detour the road away from its current course, or face the consequences.

He ignores her warning. But as reality begins to warp around the construction site, he realises he is not fighting a modern supply-chain glitch.

Deep within the shifting sands lies something sacred, something not of this world. It is a secret legacy shared by only a small disparate group of friends, its leader, a seemingly ordinary woman who shoulders a massive responsibility.
