NATIONAL BESTSELLER - She can hop into any novel, but she just can't stay there.Come along with the Book Witch in this magical and inspiring love letter to reading from the USA Today bestselling author of The Wishing Game. This hardcover edition includes gorgeously designed endpapers "Meg Shaffer continues to surprise and delight me with each book she writes."--Laurie Gilmore, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Pumpkin Spice Caf Rainy March is a proud, third-generation Book Witch, sworn to defend works of fiction from all foes real and imaginary. With her magical umbrella and feline familiar, she jumps in and out of novels to fix malicious alterations and rogue heroes like a modern-day magical Nancy Drew. Book Witches live by a strict code: Real people belong in the real world; fictional characters belong in works of fiction. Do not eat, drink, or sleep inside a fictional world, lest you become part of the story. Falling in love with a fictional character? Don't even think about it. Which is why Rainy has been forbidden from seeing the Duke of Chicago, the dashing British detective who stars in her favorite mystery series. If she's ever caught with him again, she'll be expelled from her book coven--and forced to give up the magical gifts that are as much a part of her as her own name. But when her beloved grandfather disappears and a priceless book is stolen, there's only one person she trusts to help her solve the case: the Duke. Their quest takes them through the worlds of Alice in Wonderland, King Arthur, and other classics that will reveal hidden enemies and long-buried family secrets.
This book had me giggling and kicking my feet so many times. It was just exactly what I wanted it to be: fun and sweet and a love letter to books and absolutely chock full of literary references (some fairly expected, and some very welcome, very niche references!). There are mystery elements to the plot of course, but I would say that the overall tone of the book feels more like a cozy rom-com, right up to the plot twist. After the plot twist (be prepared with tissues!), which is so beautiful and poignant, it becomes clear that this book is also a love letter to the power of libraries and the importance of the stories that shape our lives. I highly recommend this if you love metafiction, or simply books that reference other books, and especially if you’ve ever dreamed of meeting your favorite character or book boyfriend in person. The magic system here is subtly clever and appropriately literary, and I don’t know if I want to be a book witch or if I just want to hang out in the Pilcrow House library and see what happens.
Reminds me of why I love books

First time in ages I actually stalled finishing a book. I just loved this story. To be able to enter the stories I love.. be part of the story. These characters are amazing. I could see them. Feel kasha’s fur, the warmth of sunlight in his fur. Thank you for helping me out of a reading slump and reminding me why I love to read.
