The Book of Philippians: Joy in Difficulty

Most people face difficulties at some time, even someone who seems to have a charmed life. How we respond to them describes our character and shapes our future. Do we respond in fear, becoming anxious, suffering a depression, becoming angry and allowing the challenge to overcome us? Or do we have the faith which enables us to live with joy, with peace, and with hope?
The apostle Paul and Silas faced their fair share of difficulties, particularly when they visited Philippi, where they established a small community who followed Jesus. Whilst there, they caused a riot after delivering a fortune teller from a spirit of divination. Consequently, they were arrested by the Roman soldiers, whipped, and thrown into jail. It was a severe trial, but through it they responded with pure joy, singing songs during the long night which followed.
We do not know if Paul learnt the power of joy whilst he was in Philippi's jail. But the letter he sent to thank the new community for their love and care of he and Silas is full of joy, and Paul encourages us to find its power and purpose.
Few things are definite in life, but we can be certain that we will face difficulty at some stage. Challenges come from many directions. Lack of money, death of a loved one, employment stress, relationships, and friction in marriage to name a few. In this book John opens up the secret of the power of joy which enables us to overcome any difficulty with faith and hope.
