Shorter than it looks, but packs a punch.

True, this book talks about something that you just don't find in other books, and I'm very happy I bought it. But don't be decived. The real content of the book is only about 30 pages in length. The rest of the book is devoted to "sign names" which are basically the same signs except different letters of the alphabet.I was hoping for more content. However, it is still a very good choice for anyone seriously interested in ASL.

The Cultural and Linguistic Basis for Name Signs

This interesting book explains the use of name signs in the deaf community. Perhaps the most valuable feature of this book is the Name Sign List that shows the "acceptable" name signs sorted by letters of the alphabet. The reader can see which locations on the body are unlikely to represent other words beginning with the same letter. This avoids confusion when a letter of the alphabet is used to represent a person's name. A real "must have" book for any serious student of sign language and deaf culture!
