The main character is Loot (full name Wesley Leonard Carmichael), a young man born and raised in western Pennsylvania. He has had a difficult life since losing his memory in an automobile accident that also took the lives of his parents. However, he is strong-willed and able to finish college and enter the Army as a Second Lieutenant in the Field Artillery Branch. The book starts with Loot in Vietnam as a forward observer and ends up in Pittsburgh. Along the way, Loot shows his valor, which is appreciated by his fellow soldiers but not so much by the higher ups in the Army. Through some decisions he made in Vietnam, Loot becomes indebted to a man who helps him get out of the Army with an honorable discharge and no prison time. The man Loot begins working for is a federal agent of sorts, but works for a group doing special investigations at the direction of someone important in the White House. Loot has to deal with strong-arm tactics at his employment in Pittsburgh, a foreign doctor wanting to settle a score in a big way, and being sent himself to a federal prison. He also has his new family, one that he can remember. This is the first book of a series involving Loot, his new wife, friends, and associates. In the following book, his group gets a tip about possible vampires gathering in Ohio. There are shootings, kidnappings, and some interesting new characters joining the cast. Book three begins with searching for missing POW's in Vietnam, with the help of a former North Vietnam army officer, then goes into dealing with a murderous, Mexican businessman. Book four will revolve around a nasty drug dealer seeking revenge for a family member's death. All the stories deal with very serious issues and situations. However, these books are funny in places and easy to read. The books also have a lot of romance in them. If you like books by Janet Evanovich or fellow Florida writer Carl Hiaasen, I think you will enjoy this book and the rest of the series. Les Ruth
