A Hands-On Book

This is not a coffee-table book about Country Crafts. This is the go-to book for the hands-on craftsperson. Mr. Johnston trained as an architect, but worked as a sculptor. His book is packed with the practical information one needs to work with wood, clay, metals, stone and color (i.e., paints and dyes). In this book you will find recipes for mixing pottery glazes, instructions for making natural dyes, how to mix lime mortar, and what all those wood-working tools are for. (One of my favorite chapters is "How to Paint in Fresco"; not for the timid!) The Book of Country Crafts came from Mr. Johnston's lifetime of experience working with materials to create beautiful objects.
