McKay gives a great introduction to Covenant theology

David McKay gives a fantastic introduction to covenant theology in this book. His main focus is to show the Biblical support for covenant theology, and he does this extremely well. He also touches upon many of the detractors to covenant theology and gives a brief synopsis of the challenges they present and why they are incorrect. He also has a chapter on dispensationalists to discuss the differences in these theological approaches. David McKay gives a great introduction and throughout the book, eludes to different topics which can provide for further study and edification. I would strongly recommend this book to all who are new to theological study, or who may consider themselves in need of study in this particular area. McKay is solidly reformed and Presbyterian in his approach, which may turn some off, but the support he gives for his positions, while sometimes brief, are certainly sufficient to prove his position. Approx. 300 pages. A fairly quick read, and well worth the time.

Solid and Helpful

David McKay, a pastor in the Reformed Presbyterian Church in Ireland and a professor at the Reformed Theological College (Belfast), has done a wonderful service with this book. Topic by topic, Prof. McKay reveals both the comprehensiveness of God's covenant and how His covenants impact all of life.One reviewer mentioned that this was more of a systematic theology than a book on covenantal theology; my counter-argument would be that there ought to be no significant difference between the two. If we serve a covenantal God, any systematic theology we engage in ought to be covenantal. David McKay accomplishes this and helps his readers toward a more Biblical theology.

Clear-sighted, relevant and practical

It starts with delving into the nature of God himself and moves through to a conclusion with the triumph of Christ's Kingdom and a look at the new heavens and earth. Throughout, the practical usefulness of covenant theology (or how we relate to God, and He to us) is brought to bear on a huge range of issues, from biblical issues like election, sanctification and the sacraments, to current issues such as feminism, New Age Movement and evolution. In doing so, Prof. McKay provides readers with the biblical tools to understand these many topics. But this book is no cold academic exercise in some obscure area of Christian thinking. This is the very heart of our relationship with God. And it is a warm, living, beating, pulsating heart - the unfathomable mystery of God's love for unworthy sinners. Such a topic will inevitably stretch our finite minds. But if you are prepared to have your mind stretched, you will be greatly rewarded as you delve into this great subject.Prof. McKay combines clarity, incisive thinking and warm practical application. As well as coming to a clearer understanding of many topics, I found myself with much material to deepen and enrich my own devotional times. He has a gift not only for anticipating and answering your questions or objections, but doing so in such a way as to fit it all into the whole framework of scripture.This is a book to be read and studied carefully. A great reference tool and an essential part of the Christian's library.
