The story of a boy in post-war Florence, Italy who comes across a tale of partisan resistance to the Nazis and Fascists in war-torn Italy. He becomes acquainted with the statue of a boar in that city and makes a wish upon the bronze sculpture. He is later surprised by the outcome. He did indeed return to Florence and had good fortune in ways he had not predicted. He learned of harrowing tales from previous partisans while he was in that city and uncovered episodes of bravery and danger. He found that the people of Florence had long memories of their sorrowful times.
