Biography. Politics. African American Studies. The Bluffton Charge chronicles the struggle of two unsung heroes from the early moments of the Civil Rights Movement. It is written with grace and beauty by a son who sets out to understand both those turbulent times and his parents as they were before he was born. He has done a remarkable job -- Patsy Sims, The Klan. With numerous black and white photographs.
Bluffton Charge is a terrific book! It is beautifully written - with language both poetic and conscientous - every word exactly right. And the true story this book tells is an important one for all of us. The book takes us behind the scenes of the Civil Rights movement, to the movement's very beginnings, and shows us an idealistic young couple who believe they can change their world. Bluffton Charge is sad and sweet and inspiring, written by the couple's son with great love and respect for his parents and what they attempted to accomplish in the deep south of the 1950's.
A great and important book

Truly a great achievement. Stephen howie has brilliantly reminded us that it required great strides by all Americans to overcome racism in this country and that the movement did not rely on the leadership of those at the top. His writing style and sense of imagery is truly unique. As a first-time reader of one of Mr. Howie's books, I can understand why my colleagues have reccommended him so highly.
A fine example of the depths of the civil right movement.

Many folks are aware of the larger figures involved in the civil rights movement. This book tells the story of a couple fighting status quo on a much more local level. I gained a much better appreciation of the politics of the south in the 1950's Stephen Howie has done an excellent job telling this story. Had it not been recommended to me I doubt I would have picked it up. I am glad I did!
