In the summer of 1940 England faced the victorious Nazi forces across the English Channel, her back to the Atlantic Ocean. She was alone. The British had several military advantages including an outstanding integrated air defense system that the Nazis underestimated and two magnificent fighter planes, the Hurricane and Spitfire. The British also had several problems threatening their success. Their aerial combat formations and tactics were outdated and obsolete at the speeds of aerial combat in 1940. Their pilots were inexperienced and replacement pilots were under trained with a poor survival rate. As the story begins, Captain Benjamin Archer, United States Army Air Corps, is in England at Northolt Air Base as an observer. He is a superbly trained fighter pilot who offers to fly with new replacements to train them and give them a better chance to survive combat. While training them, he teaches them to fly a more effective fighting formation. Supporting the RAF during its darkest and finest hours, he becomes more involved, flying in combat without the knowledge of his commanders and experiencing the stress and trauma of multiple daily combat flights. He worries about how to escape the dilemma he has created and continue his career as a fighter pilot in the Army Air Corps. Although Ben Archers story is fictional, it takes place within the historical Battle of Britain. The strategic and tactical mistakes the Nazis made prevented them from winning the battle in time to invade England; however, England came very close to losing this crucial battle.
