I'm a big fan of medical and plague-type thrillers, but this one was a real shocker. This one was real, raw, and on the edge. You love Dr. Mallow because in spite of his flaws he's a dedicated scientist who knows too well he's the only one with a handle on the crisis - and the powers that be are about to jerk his funding! (Jerks!) Throw in a brilliant student who's doing groundbreaking research but who, we suspect, may have an agenda of his own. When Dr. Mallow goes into the most secure lab in the country, the sweatiest medical examiner's table, and all around the familiar haunts of Galveston Island, you're right with him. Sure, the technical stuff was way over my head, but that's what makes it so real. Dr. Boor is for real! I could've shot him for the ending, though...
Terrific

Blood Notes grabbed me in the first chapter and I was up until 1:00 AM finishing it. Written in the first person, the main character is realistic with an average share of human faults, a good sense of humor and an inherent kindness that's not immediately apparent. The author is especially adept with his descriptions of places, sights and tastes. His imagery is on par with Pat Conroy but, gratefully, without the verbosity. It's a relevant mystery which flows well with the right mix of spice and diverse characters to guarantee you'll be entertained. When you close the book you'll be hungry for both a sequel and oyster shooters in Galveston.
An engaging, quirky bio-thriller

As a scientist with a research lab near the real bio-terrorism facility in Galveston, Paul Boor's novel was especially enjoyable to read. This reader hopes that Dr. Boor will write another installment blending dangerous pathogens, cutting edge science, quirky characters, and island life.

If you like Biothrillers, then this book is a must read! I initially bought the book for my wife; but as a medical student, I couldn't resist the allure of Peter Mallow's ill-fated research lab. It's been a while since I've read a story written in the first person, but the diary style writing used by Dr. Boor flows smoothly and certainly keeps the reader on the edge of his/her seat the entire time. My only disappointment by the end of this short novel was that it was just that, a short novel. I wanted the story to continue... but, perhaps it will if Dr. Boor ever decides to write a sequel!
An engaging and scary bio-thriller

If you like bio-thrillers this one is for you! I was at loose ends one and picked up "The Blood Notes", thinking to pass some time. I was enthralled, hooked, couldn't put it down! I read straight through and had to finish it that night. What a page-turner. The author is a research scientists himself, and the novel's setting is a bio-research lab dealing with bird flu-type pathogens. Major characters are a research scientist and of course a troubled and troubling student, and both are developed to a "T", believable and on the money. I've worked with such folks and as a psychotherapist I found these guys perfectly believable. I appreciated the inclusion of the life-history events which had shaped and bent them in their particular directions. Kudos to author Boor for giving us a "real" ending. Altogether a totally satisfying read.
