The best-laid plans can lead to success

"Are you ready for your success?"That is the question that is essentially asked and answered in Roderick Claybrooks' The Black Student's Guide to Success. Starting each chapter with a quote or phrase, Dr. Claybrooks discusses everything from "The importance of knowledge" to " What is wealth and are you wealthy?" While chapters such as these are universal, Dr. Claybrooks addresses some issues that are specific to African Americans such as "Acting White", "Dispel the Myth", and "Our Obligation." One of the things I enjoyed about the book was Dr. Claybrooks did not leave the advice at college choice but discussed the responsibility of parents or the people on the student's team of success. One chapter that stuck with me was his chapter on how to choose a college. He broke it down. He discussed how not to based one's choisce on faulty reasoning. Fault three especially touched me-not choosing a Historically Black College or University because there is an assumption of inferior education. Unfortunately this misconception runs rampant among those who have never bothered to investigate an HBCU. Being a graduate of one(although having not started my college career there) I knew that going was the best decision for me. And interestingly enough he mentions every friend of his that attended an HBCU has loved it. His point was not that every Black child should go to Howard, Hampton, Bennett et al, but be informed in making these kinds of choices. He also is clear in pointing out that student in the title does not refer to just youth but everyone wanting to better their life. While I am not convinced his accomplishments in becoming a doctor completely qualifies him in talking about all that he takes on, his advice seems sound. Along with that advice he shares personal experiences as well as the wisdom that was shared with him by others. Overall I think that this book is ideal for the student who is unsure of what to do but open to the possibilities. Kotanya APOOO BookClub

The Black Student's Guide to Success - A book for all

I am delighted to share with others my experience with a book that I think is just wonderful. The title really does not do it justice though, because truly this is a book for people in all different stages of life. The Author touches on many different issues that we've all experienced or will experience at some point or another. It is an excellant motivational tool for teenagers, men, and women alike. Dr. Claybrooks shares many of his experiences growing up in an urban neighborhood in Detroit, as a college student, and now as a Surgeon. Whether dealing with school, careers, finances, etc. I absolutely believe that everyone who reads this book will come away with a better outlook on life in general.

A Must Read....

This book is an excellent choice. It is a clear and concise guide for students of all ages, young and seasoned. I found myself not wanting to put it down. Dr. Claybrooks does a great job of providing a fresh new perspective of what it takes to be successful. I encourage anyone with a thirst for knowledge and a desire for success to read the wisdom contained in the easy-to-read pages of, "The Black Student's Guide to Success." It will change your life.

Profound!!!!

This book is a must have! It has everything you wish someone had told you before you began your journey in life. The principle theme is.. That we must all be 'students' of life. Forever seeking knowledge and challenging ourselves to improve. Removing the barriers and self-limitations. This book has opened my eyes and changed my life. I bought copies as gifts and have given them to friends' of mine children (young adults 14+)- offering to pay them $50.00 to read it!!
