The Way it Should Be

Being A Pa. State Trooper, I am a little bias in my review of this book. I found it to be an outstanding history of the oldest uniformed state police force in the nation. It harkens back to a time when the police were not hampered by politicians or political correctness and it's leaders were men who attained their rank through merit rather than favor. I have recommended it to several other Troopers and all have found it to be an excellent read. Had I the power I would make it required reading at the PSP Academy in Hershey.

The Black Hussars

Fascinating book with a strong emphasis on the conditions existing in the Pennsylvania coal mines as a very important backdrop to the formation of the first state police force in the Nation. The lack of political intervention at the time of the Pennsylvania State Police was formed was a very important reason for the success of the idea. The author has stressed this and, I think, it is one of the reasons that the idea took hold and was copied by all the states.I found the book easy to read and quite informative.
