Hap Goodman was a marshal, well a former marshal. He walked away from his position as marshal of Yuma when it became obvious that the US cavalry was getting a bit too neighborly. By neighborly, I mean they were too damn pushy, giving orders where they had no business giving orders. So, he walked away. Though it might have had something to do with a woman. He rode north on the train all the way to the Black Hills of the Dakota Territory. Maybe a new start was just what the doctor ordered. Elizabeth Givens was a no-nonsense schoolteacher, looking for her first assignment. Something different than the well-heeled suitors she was used to. Men who wanted her to serve tea and shut the hell up like a good girl was supposed to do. Hap and Elizabeth ran into each other on the train, as if God himself put them together like two chess pieces. They simply played the part that fate had set for them. A fate that would eventually bring powerful people with money into the mix. Who will win this showdown set up by God himself. Men driven by money and power, or a stubborn ex-marshal with a bad temper and a fast draw along with a stubborn schoolmarm who can shoot with the best of them.
