What is a country? Is it only a border, a flag, and a place on a map, or something deeper that people build together?
Hi, my name is Ethan Solace-an interdisciplinary psychologist and a dad. Picture books are often the first place children encounter the wider world, but we don't always stop to think about who wrote them, or the lasting impression they leave.
I wrote The Big Questions series to be premium, exciting, child-friendly, and based on how children actually engage, not talking down to them, but exploring with them. The Big Questions: What Is a Country? is a children's nonfiction picture book that turns one of the biggest questions in civics, citizenship, and belonging into an unforgettable journey through borders, flags, laws, identity, trust, rights, responsibilities, and the shared promise that holds a country together.
Created for kids ages 5-12, this country book for children explores what a country really is, how countries begin, why borders matter, what citizens owe one another, and how belonging works. From tribes becoming towns, to the birth of borders, to flags, laws, fairness, and the citizen's contract, this book helps children understand that a country is more than land. It is a shared home built by people who agree to protect, respect, and contribute to something larger than themselves.
Inside this children's nonfiction civics book, readers will discover:
