"When this book appeared in 1986 this was the first collection of Elmer Kelton's short stories to be gathered in one place. At least as far as I know. At the time Mr. Kelton was becoming a rather well known and respected author who would soon be propelled to even greater heights. These stories were some of his early efforts published in the many western magazines in the era when westerns ruled the television air ways. Most of them are from the magazine, Ranch Romances, from the middle of the 1950's. And they are what most of us who like 'traditional' western stories love to read. They feature enough action and love interest to make them enjoyable reads. With titles like Yellow Devil; Lonesome Ride to Pecos; Coward; and Horse Well, they give the reader a sense of the Old West as it is, or was, believed to be. And with Mr. Kelton you can believe the West he wrote about was the real thing. A Good Collection of his work.
