The best book about the weirdest band you've never heard

Perhaps you've heard The Black Math Experiment, perhaps you haven't... that's part of the thrill of real rock n' roll. Put aside mass radio play and sold out stadium shows - there's nothing like standing shoulder to shoulder with friends and strangers in a dive bar and for a few glorious minutes be swept up in a frenzy of music. Besides being about a band, this book is an awful lot like such a show. It's real, it's personal (sometimes VERY personal), free of pretension and glamour, but full of raw energy and well, hope. It's a story of trying for the impossible, even when life punches you in the face... or just ignores you. It's a wild ride that is far too bizarre to be a work of fiction and the man behind the steering wheel is perhaps the most unlikely rock star you'll ever meet, with a voice you simply can't ignore. It's one man and one band, spilling their guts all over the tiny, dirty stage - just for you. Sometimes that involves being showered in streams of toilet paper, unwrapping a set of pirate costume accessories tossed at you from onstage, or being asked to sing the "Time Warp" in your pajamas. I know because I was there, at least for some of it... standing shoulder to shoulder with friends and strangers and being swept up in the immitigable energy and sheer madness that was The Black Math Experiment. It's all true, every last word. I still have the eyepatch.

From the moment I read that line, I was hooked. I set my expections low when I picked up this book, hell I didn't even buy it for myself but for my wife but I figured I'd read it too. Being from Houston and also being raised in Galena Park I new very well from where Jef with one F came from and could relate to him on I think on a higher level then most. This book is well written and even though I've never been in a band (and after reading this book, I'm sure glad that I never was...) Jef with one F really made you feel like you were part of BME and in this you feel bad when things go wrong and you feel joy when things go there way (which isn't alot). I would recommend this to anyone who likes a good story and I really enjoyed reading this book...

best unclassifiable book

In 2008, the Houston Press named The Black Math Experiment, The best "unclassifiable band." With this book, Jef with One F has succeeded in writing the best "unclassifiable book." To call this a rock n roll memoir does not begin to encompass all that this book is. I have never been in a band or played an instrument. I am unfamiliar with most of the clubs/people described in the book. I picked it up mainly out of curiosity and the desire to support local Houston artists. What I found was that I literally COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN. This book made me laugh out loud on a number of occasions. It also touched my heart deeply in parts. Its part humor, part memoir, part "how to" instruction manual for fledging artists, and a touching tribute to the deep human connections that one makes throughout this life. I am pushing everyone I know to read this book.

Black Math Experiment Rocks

I read this book cover to cover in one day and loved it. Anyone in a local band or trying to form a local band needs to read this book and benefit from Jef's experiences. A funny and well wriiten account of a band's struggle for recognition and acceptance in the Houston music scene.

Remembering Black Math

BME has become something of an underground legend in Houston TX over the last decade, furiously gigging accross the state of Texas and forging a mysterious comeradery with actor David Arquette. Having had the privilage to see BME many times over the years, it was indeed and joyous romp to read this memoir. Anyone who's ever spent some time doing the band thing will appreciate all the great experiences wrapped-up in this little piece. Rolling in to filthy clubs, arguing with sound-techs, piling into vans, sleeping on apartment floors, all the work that goes into releasing an independent record, all covered through the lens of Jef with One F's wit and witicism. If you've ever happened to see BME play live you'll further enjoy the behind-the-scenes revelations and probably be amused to learn that Jef tends to write in a manner similar to his live performances - a healthy combination of energy and irony. Be prepared for a ride that's even wierder than Austin.
