Book Overview

What happened to Fischer wasn't my fault. In 1944, the year it all started, a war between nations engulfed the world. That same year the students of New Canaan High School waged another kind of war.... This description may be from another edition of this product.

The Grand Circle

Usually not a big fan of fiction, I was enthralled. There's a genuine quality to all the characters, even the less honorable ones. Mr. Rogers' writing style is clean and intriguing. The story line is compelling, even profound at times, and more than once did a tear come to my eye. If you're going to tell a story about the goodness that dwells within each of us, this is how you do it. If you believe in the hope that humanity can save itself from itself, this is a good starting point. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to be inspired without feeling mushy. I too look forward to the possibility of continuing Tucker Landis's saga with another offering from this talented author.

A Triumph in Lyrical Storytelling!

The Between Season by Lon Rogers is a nostalgic mix of pathos and joy that will resonate with anyone who's ever had a best friend. Told in the first person tradition of Salinger and Knowles, this gripping story captivates the reader from the very first page and doesn't let go until the very last. The deeply drawn characters will inhabit your psyche and never leave. The unforgettable language bombards the senses with lyrical prose that borders on poetic. Destined to be an ageless classic that will transcend age, appealing to the young as well as the young at heart.

Marvelous!

Many novelists these days resort to so many gimmicks that they forget the basics of writing a good book. Lots of characters are introduced and never really developed, leaving the reader puzzled. There are constant time shifts, pointless attempts to end chapters in a suspenseful mode, confusing plot twists that lead nowhere. What a refreshing contrast is this splendid book! Dr. Rogers really knows how to tell a story. He develops characters in a meaningful way, bringing them depth and life so the reader gets emotionally involved in their lives. He sets time and place in a vivid way. This story happens in the mid-forties in a small Texas town. The author provides delicious details that make you feel you are there. His narration is engaging and clear, with one situation logically leading to another. A compelling, fascinating read that's hard to put down. As a Kindle owner since they first came out, I actually found it difficult at first to go back to a traditional book. When this comes out on Kindle, I plan to read it again! And I look forward to more works by this gifted writer.

A book about growing up.

This book is about Tucker Landis, a 17 year old in his last year of high school in a small Texas town at the end of World War II. It is as if we, the readers, are, through Tucker, reliving the last year of high school again, but with a wisdom we did not then have. We are introduced to the in-crowd, the out-crowd and those in between in his school, his first lust, best friend, first beer. The story ends with his enrollment in college and leaving his childhood, or at least that part of it, behind. The book is well written, short sentences which express thoughts, feelings, and dialogue that feel real. It is a short book, one that I did not put down to do something else. It is sad, funny, heartwarming and in the end uplifting. I look forward to more from this author and am left wanting to read the next installment in the life of Tucker Landis. Michael Morris

An insightful novel. Entertaining, and a quick read

The Between Season captures the times of a world at war and of teenagers caught up in their own personal war within their high school. A snobby social club called "The Blues" and their pals, the Jocks, look down their noses at those they deem lesser mortals. Special targets of their bigotry are Carlos, a freshman boy who loves boys, and ZeeZee, an unwed mother. It is with the Jeffersonian ideal that "all persons are created equal" that Fischer declares his war against the snobs, elitists and bigots at school. Students take sides, the war escalates, and the conflict leads to an unexpected and vicious act of violence. Fischer's story is told by his best friend, Tucker Landis, who chronicles that tumultuous year within the school, and his own stormy love affair with an older woman. He pays homage to Fischer, a visionary, whose attempts to change their school also changes Tucker. The book is targeted toward adults and high school students. It is a quick read, insightful and well written.
