Amazing, Creative Cookbook

I love to cook and this is one of the few cookbooks that I own that I keep going back to. The recipes are mostly easy, some are moderate, but all of them creative and unique. This is a truly whole foods cookbook with creative salads, entrees and amazing desserts. I love their desserts because they are on the wholesome side, yet delicious. Although I am vegan, Volume one is worth buying because it has great cooking tips and techniques. Many of the recipes can be altered to become vegan. I highly recommend both books! If you are ever in Bridgeport, CT, their restaurant is like a mini-vacation overlooking Long Island Sound and the food is fantastic. We drive up from New York City many times a year just for brunch!

Bloodroot is a unique combination of restaurant and bookstore

Bloodroot is a unique combination of restaurant and bookstore that was founded in a Bridgeport Connecticut residential neighborhood in 1977. Illustrated with both black-and-white as well as color illustrations, "The Best Of Bloodroot" is a two volume collection of meatless recipes that are as 'kitchen cook friendly' as they are healthy, nutritious, and absolutely delicious, reflecting the entire spectrum of dishes that have made Bloodroot one of the most innovative restaurants in the country offering gourmet quality ethnic and seasonal cuisines with dishes drawn from the culinary traditions of many different nations. Volume 1 focuses on 'Vegetarian Recipes' and begins with an informative introduction that includes notes from a cooking class demonstrating the basic of how to cook and eat vegetarian dishes, along with guidelines for achieving authentic and authoritative vegetarian menus. Volume 2 has as its orientation 'Vegan Recipes' and provides a veritable wealth of dairy-free recipes guaranteed to please any palate and satisfy any appetite. Enhanced with personal essays on various health, social, political, and ethical aspects of a vegetarian diet, a glossary of useful and thematically relevant terms, "The Best Of Bloodroot" is a simply outstanding and continually impressive compilation that ranges from a Persimmon, Walnut, and Buttermilk Pudding; New Potato, Carrot, and Broccoli Salad with Garlic Mayonnaise; Cardamon Bread; and Roasted Bosc pears with Walnuts, Blue Cheese, and Raspberry Vinaigrette; to Dried Cherry Apple Strudel; Three-Mushroom Stroganoff; Chilled Lemon Zucchini Soup with Leeks and Herbs; and Broccoli Raab Calzone. No personal, professional, or community library vegetarian cookbook collection can be considered complete without the inclusion of "The Best Of Bloodroot: Volumes 1 & 2"!

Great Restaurant

I just ate at the restaurant for the first time two nights ago. It was a really terrific meal, very simple and not extraordinarily creative but delicious, hearty and definitely organic. On the way out I was tempted to buy one of their books if only to get the recipe for the Brown Rice Pudding which was fantastic. This cookbook offers great recipes for both simple and more elegant dishes. Certainly worth buying.
