The series is best read in order as many stories often span more than one book, and characters evolve.

Alma moves in with H ctor in Granada, and H ctor departs for Peru. This constitutes cohabitation. Or not. Tenienta Alma Perez of the Guardia Civil is now head of the Granada province homicide section, so she is too busy to notice at first.

Three Partido Popular politicans have been murdered in Granada. Viva La Republica signs are meant to implicate 'anarchists'. Clever, or what? No one is going to check on corruption gone wrong or any nonsense like that with the 1936 civil war writ large. One death occurs in the Guardia territory, so Alma is working with Inspector Jefe Jos Blanco of the Polic a Nacional.

It is thought there might be a witness to one murder, but woman doesn't want to talk to the police. Jes s is hired to gently interrogate her, does so, shares the Energy, then keeps the information to himself. Then another ex-PP politico is murdered in Pueblo this time, and Carmen gets involved in a separate investigation. Are the murders related? Investigating the past of the Pueblo politicos does seem to suggest a tie in.

In Ku lap in Per intrepid archaeologist H ctor is hoping to uncover the Big One on a dig in Chachapoyas (Cloud Warriors) territory. What he uncovers are (1) a surprise about his own past which changes his present and possibly his future; and (2) racism against the local Quechua and himself, being half Quechua. Archaeological finds don't get much of a look in, although the statue was a cheering find.

Jes s and Lampi are off to Madrid to see if they can help the injured son of the lead archaeologist who has had to leave the Chachapoyas site to be with his seriously injured son. Another story unfolds. Then Lampi (the Mother), Jes s (the Healer) then fly to Peru with Professor Sanchez because Lampi has strange messages about her own son, H ctor. They learn of Ima, the deaf-mute woman who says H ctor is her baby's father. Is he? Then suddenly, H ctor is missing. Kidnapped? Abducted by Aliens? Turned to stone? Down a hole?

In LEC Juan tells us more about Billio, as Bill the Baphomet is now known, and his sidekick, Mario. Is he a clone? What does he want? Is he collecting DNA from
toxic Life Forms? Does he have Juan's DNA? Do Spirits even have DNA?

We learn more about Jes s2's sad parallel life and marriage in Israel.

Back to crime in the Materium. Well, no one in Granada fell for the civil war clue, but the team's cunning manages to uncover the usual reasons behind the murders. And, after a sleepless night, Alma remembers where she's seen the gunman. However, it costs her a friend. And Carmen solves the Pueblo murder, while making a friend. But then, Carmen loves a murderer. As we know.

But H ctor is still missing. Alma didn't even get to tell him about the pregnancy or to admonish him for so many things. Watch this space...
