"It is dangerous to be right in the matters about which established authority is wrong" - Voltaire. Will Crockett knows this quote well and repeats it often. In fact, it's become a mantra for his existence in Milldale. He tried to do the right things, take the right stands, be on the right side of history, but the entire town is led by the local manufacturing plant, and they always end up being the opponent on every topic. This is particularly true for the schools and the vindictive principal who has always been out to get Will. As he grows and begins to see how the rest of the world beyond the borders of Milldale works, he becomes more belligerent and resistant to the narrow-minded philosophy of the town. But his stance only lands him in deeper trouble. Will needs to get out, but can he survive two more years until he can escape to college, or will he be broken and faced with a dead-end job in the plant, as his father and grandfather before him were stripped of ambition and humanity?
