Overarching the main story of the book is Dave the narrator's attempt to make some kind of sense out of the events that have occurred in the past year of his life. In a bit of a time-worn motif, he is writing, or in other words he is telling a story in order to make meaning. This ties in with one of the themes of the book, the effects of miscommunication. This lack of communication can be the result of several things, lack of competence in a foreign language, lack of patience, racial and gender preconceptions, not listening carefully enough, or simply the fear of the truth. Dave is seemingly swept along with the events that are out of his control--or are they?
