In the Jim Crow south, a genius Black man and his family find themselves destitute and hungry. Despite his voracious appetite for knowledge, the 1950's south has no room for an educated Black man. But he is crafty and uses his hands and knowledge of multiple trades to feed and create a home for his family. Nevertheless, Jim Crow racism usually gets the best of them, especially when the bell tolls. Along the way, they encounter the descendants of slave holding presidents, and their confrontational demeanor sends them on the run. Eventually, their hostile environment drives them closer to America's home and American freedom. Yet, this intellectual is left with one more task when he encounters the authors of the Bell Curve.
