Vienna's cinemas attract a total of around 5 million visitors per year. This is a remarkable figure. Vienna's cinema landscape is characterised by a wide and diverse range of venues. While the inner districts are home to mainly small arthouse cinemas, large cinema complexes, known as multiplexes, have increasingly settled on the outskirts of the city since the 1990s. These are the ones that clearly lead the audience statistics and often crowd out the small arthouse cinemas. However, there are some arthouse cinemas in Vienna that have established themselves in recent years and have been able to maintain or even increase their audience numbers. Foremost among these is the Gartenbaukino, which has been able to establish itself alongside the multiplex cinemas thanks to its high quality and programming. This paper examines and highlights the differences between arthouse cinemas and multiplex cinemas, as well as their audiences, using the Gartenbaukino and UCI Millenium City as examples.
