Red took the journal and the small wooden box from beneath her mattress. William had entrusted the coin to her when he left for the summer. He had a job at a camp on a lake about an hour away, and he didn't dare bring the coin with him. Instead of hiding it in his own room, he had entrusted it to Red. She sat down on her bed and opened the box. There was the old coin, sitting on an equally old piece of fabric. Red wondered, as she had so many times before, where the coin had come from. The face that was towards her had an imprint of a cat. It was a beautiful cat, sitting demurely with its tail curled behind it. Red carefully reached into the box and, using her fingernail, flipped the coin over. The back of the coin had a face of a beautiful woman wearing a tiara. The tiara had what looked like a snake at the center, but there was a smudge of dirt on it. Red carefully wiped at the smudge with her thumb.
