The Beginners Bible Who's Who in the Old Testament (Beginners Bible)

ISBN 0679877401 - Usually, when I review kids' books, I point out, for non-believers, when there's a religious tone in a book - I assume that I don't have to point that out with this one! Yup, religious. And pretty basic religious stuff, at that. This small board book introduces young readers to several characters from the bible, dedicating one page to each person and depicting them, in an appropriate setting, on the facing page. Adam & Eve - Bad; kids might be freaked out by "So, when Adam was asleep, God took one of Adam's ribs and made someone special from it." Good; they don't mention getting kicked out of Eden. Noah - Good; the flood is to "wash away all the evil in the world", so kids probably won't (yet) wonder about what happened to all the people who weren't on the ark. Abraham & Sarah. Joseph - Bad; the wording "Joseph's brother were jealous, so they sold him." might give a kid or two ideas. Moses - Bad; it says his mother hid him in a basket in the river, but not why. Gideon. Hannah. David. Elijah. Daniel. Jonah. The stories are hilariously bad, from an adult perspective. Huge bits of info are skimmed over or left out, leaving the small profiles of each person a bit vague sometimes. Still, from the viewpoint of a child who doesn't know the stories at all, these are nice and simple biographical blurbs that they can understand. The text is all right, the illustrations are really well done. The full-page illustrations are bright, colorful and a couple are even exciting; there are also tiny little images around the edges of the text which enhance the story nicely. The copyright is held by James R. Leininger, but I have no clue if he is the author, the illustrator, both or neither. The thick board book pages will stand up to a great deal of abuse and are much easier to turn, for little fingers. The size is great; small enough to make a good take-along book and to be held in tiny hands. - AnnaLovesBooks
