A series of poems tells the story of a young woman coming to terms with her past, from her Southern childhood to her return home as an adult to help her dying mother. This description may be from another edition of this product.
Conroy's richly textured language crafts jewells out of bare feeling and trauma--from the death of a parent to the facing of the crimes of the grandparents--and out of small moments that gleem with meaning. My favorite is "Lake Lure," the hymn to girlhood. "These were the ankle-deep pastures that rang rolling bluebells; out of small lives came cloudy humming, I moved in gnatsong." I have a tiny collection of poetry and consider this book one of its gems.
