The Bastard Citizen

He trained in Europe and acquired some experience as a medical doctor, then he moved back to Nigeria to establish his own private health facility called Omega Medical Centre. He is simply known as "the doctor". He established this facility in a suburban region that is far from his hometown as a business strategy to avoid the typical familiarity and dishonour that comes with doing business with one's own people. Unfortunately, the doctor faced challenges he never expected, both in nature and in magnitude. Being constantly reminded of being a stranger, despite being a citizen of the land, he faced severe challenges from the government, his competitors, his staff, neighbours, thugs and even from the local population he is attempting to save. In a time when the country is economically on its knees, everyone just wants to survive, even if it comes at the expense of another. And this caused him to suffer from backstabbing, intimidation, extortion, sexual harassment, ideological conflicts with religious leaders, interprofessional conflicts, gross lack of awareness and misinformation from the public and even physical assault. His patience is getting stretched and his tenacity gradually running out of gas. His passion is beginning to dwindle as he begins to think of what is best for him and his family. Immediately after surviving one arrow, comes the next in a back-to-back "social hard labour" that keeps altering his ability to thrive in the local community. He reached his elastic limit when political intimidation prevented him from saving a life timely. So, would the doctor break at this point and leave or would he continue despite these enormous challenges?
"The Bastard Citizen" is not only intriguing and fast-paced, but also fierce, emotions-stimulating and highly engaging as the story which focuses on a complex Nigerian society that functions on a survival mode is expressed as raw as it can ever be. This is a true-life story of my experiences when I came back home from training abroad to contribute my little quota in the health sector of the country. This therefore means that you will experience a strong voice from the manuscript.
