Comprehensive, Fun, and Interesting

Baseball Timeline is a true work of art. it is obvious that the author spent an enormous amount of time researching and contemplating the information that went into the book. i am an avid baseball fan of the last ten to fifteen years or so, and i was still amazed by the facts and stories included in the book for those years. needless to say, i was even more enlightened while reading and learning about the prior hundred years or so. id say that Baseball Timeline is a must have for any avid fan of America's Pastime, as well as a must read for any fan of sports or history, or sports history. Author Solomon makes learning fun, and this is a breath of fresh air!

Perfect for stats freaks and folks who love baseball history

Only the BE, an Elias guide and baseball-reference.com compares to this book in depth of facts, and only Bouton's BALL FOUR, Shropshire's SEASONS IN HELL and Karlen's SLOUCHING TOWARD FARGO compare to it in terms of sheer baseball fun. I have used this book on countless occasions to settle arguments and to jog my memory about thoroughly obscure events, and many times I have settled into it just to review the decade of my childhood through the best lens possible: a diamond wrapped in green. If you love the game, I assue you, you will love this book.--Stephen S. Power

Reading about Baseball can be Great Fun

Since I have been a baseball fan for most of my life it is a pleasure to find a book that covers all the angles of baseball information. I sat down with this book and found it hard to put down. Most of the time you don't call a book like this a page turner, but in Mr. Solomon's case he has devoloped a style and uniqueness that makes this book great fun. I found out things that I never knew and where so interesting that I feel that I am a better person for reading this book

Great book! Day-to-day account makes me feel I was there!

This is the best historical baseball book for the value that I have ever read. It does a great job of going through the key happenings from one day to the next, both on-the-field and off-the-field. The evolution of baseball is seen clearly, especially in the 1900's when rule changes were continuously happening. You can see the effects the changes had on the overall statistics. The amount of work that went into putting this book together must have been unbelievable. The book can be approached in many ways. You can: a) look for a particular day in history to see what happened, b) read through a year of particular interest, c) look at the league leaders in major statistics as well as awards given each year, and d) use the index to read about a particular person, event, etc. Lastly, you can read it cover-to-cover, which is what I did the first time. There are a few errors here and there (very small amount compared to the total amount of information in the book), but I am sure they will be corrected in the next edition, which I will surely buy!

Excellent - but not outstanding

The Baseball Timeline is an excellent book. It is packed with lots of interesting information about the history of baseball listed by calendar day for each year. However, it has two major flaws. One is that it uses the inaccurate Baseball Encyclopedia instead of the much, much more accurate (and OFFICIAL) encyclopedia, Total Baseball. The other flaw is that Solomon's book is very skimpy in details for the 19th. century. In all honesty, I would recommend that readers who REALLY want a day-by-day type outline of baseball history should get The Baseball Chronology (by Charlton) instead.
