America, as we know it, is dead. From its ashes, New America emerges; a xenophobic state with smaller borders due to granting African-Americans and Hispanics their own separate territories (former American states). This once stable area of the world is now a powder keg waiting to ignite. The unrest makes it impossible for Barrington Prep senior Ryan Taylor and his three friends Marcus, Michael, and Cooper, to focus on studying or their looming graduation. Then, thanks to New America's radical President-elect, all hell breaks loose.

Without warning, New American forces attack the fledgling minority nations, sending the continent into further chaos. Soon after, soldiers drag Marcus and Michael--both minorities--out of their dorms, forcing them into a detainment camp. After weeks of torture, Ryan and Cooper help them escape and together, set off to get Marcus and Michael home in a new world lost to rampant bigotry and fear. Their coming-of-age journey across regions brimming with political unrest and racial uprising is colored by the personal pressures brought to bear on all of them; an experience that will haunt one of them forever.
