In Tanzania 2003, Rehema and Fatuma are two friends who decide that they will only eat bananas every day. Together with their devotion to the truth and idealistic spirit, this addiction slowly propels them far into the lands of ideas and action. They evolve from reserved science students to steadfast activists for justice, and ultimately find themselves behind bars with their friend, Alice, after being convicted of terrorism charges. All three girls see through the machinations of their own government to oppress their own people and of global capitalism to bring about r gime change, the better to sustain a stranglehold over poorer economies and to prop up aptly named 'banana republics'.
