The year is 1934. Clarence Robinson, the twenty six year old son of a wealthy businessman embarks with three companions on a long cruise aboard his forty-eight foot yacht, AZURE BLUE. A typhoon dashes the boat against the lava rocks of a tiny Pacific island. Only Clarence survives. Forced to become a modern "Robinson Crusoe", he must use his wits, his physical stamina, and his strength of character to survive. His only help from civilization is a coil of rope and a scullery knife, which is all he salvages from his completely demolished boat. Japanese invade the island in 1944. He knows nothing about the war, but his instincts tell him to stay hidden from the armed and alien force. In time they capture him, but the consequences that result are not what might be expected. An uncommon relationship develops between him and the Nippon officer, in spite of their cultural differences and the fact that their countries are at war. Clarence eventually returns home, a man long-supposed dead, who encounters his parents and old friends as someone they hardly know.
