When the power of choice is uncorrupted, the spirit of darkness appears in an attempt to skew the landscape so that Chloe's choices are limited to only the negative choices. The spirit of darkness cannot take away the power of choice (which is God's ultimate gift to mankind) it can only corrupt one's vision so that one can only see the dark portion and not the entire view (which includes both the light and dark portions).
