It's essentially the La Croix version of the Handmaid's Tale. The government is shown through little news snippets at the beginning of each chapter to be falling apart, and we see the characters slowly learning that the system (which has been in place for roughly 100 years at the time of the book) is complete nonsense and that the economy is essentially held together with human trafficking and high interest loans. There are parts that are truly horrible content wise, but given the current climate and the general idiocy of governmental decisions that make no sense, it's timely enough. The writing is alright, though the three older main characters can become a little juvenile in their speech patterns at times. Ok premise, decent plot, not too heavy on writing style, and just enough world building to make suspension of disbelief easy without digging too deeply.
