It is an unfortunate occurrence when a great Islamic scholar and his works are forgotten, lost in the sand of time. This is essentially what happened with the great Kamal Ad-Din Ash-Shumunni; a student of Hafidh Al-'Iraqi and Al-Badr Az-Zarkashi, a classmate and lifelong friend of Ibn Hajar Al-'Asqalani, he was a giant in the science of Hadith in Cairo. Before his untimely passing at the age of 55, he had penned several great works on Hadith and its sciences. This poem, Bughyah A-alib Al-athith , is one such work. It was written as a beginner text, only 22 lines on the absolute essentials of Mustalah Al-Hadith . Unlike most other works, which due to their brevity leave much room for misunderstanding, this poem has been supplemented with an accessible English commentary. It is the perfect stepping stone for one who wishes to embark on the journey of studying Mustalah Al-Hadith, and it is hoped that by the translation and propagation of this work, it will lead to both sparking a greater interest in this branch of Islamic 'Ilm and interest in the lives and works of the scholars of Hadith, on whose backs our understanding of the words of the Messenger of Allah is built.
