The earliest recorded image of Crystal Cove is a painting by William Wendt, dated 1912. Titled "Crystal Cove," the painting was done "en plein air," a style of painting the Laguna Beach colony of artists embraced at the turn of the last century. The artists explored Crystal Cove on horseback and captured on canvas the pristine coastline and secluded coves. The tradition of plein air painting continues today in Crystal Cove State Park. Artists immerse themselves in the natural environment to interpret the natural beauty of every season. Vertical bluffs, historic cottages, 3.2 miles of shoreline, and untamed backcountry provide the inspiration. Each year, local artists apply to be part of the Crystal Cove Art Program. Our distinguished Art Council selects a group of thirty artists to display and sell their work in the Park Store. The proceeds from art sales benefit the non-profit Crystal Cove Alliance and raise valuable funds for education, restoration, and conservation within Crystal Cove State Park.
